چکیده
Photoredox processes induced by metal-tometal charge transfer (MMCT) excitation have a t tracted much attention in recent years [1-4]. These processes may be exploited for applications in arti ficial photosynthesis and photocatalysis [5, 6], They also facilitate our understanding of optical and thermal electron transfer in general [7, 8], A point of particular interest is the relationship be tween inner-sphere (IS) and outer-sphere (OS) CT interaction of closely related donor/acceptor sys tems such as suitable binuclear complexes (e.g. [(NH3)5Ru(III)<>NC)Ru(II)(CN)5-] [9]) and the corresponding ion pairs (e.g. [Ru(II)(NHj)6]3*[Ru(H)(CN)J-[10,11]). iS MMCT transitions are not restricted to ligandbridged complexes. They also occur if a reducing and an oxidizing metal center are connected by a direct, but polar m etal-m etal bond such as H g (II)-C o (-I) in [HgCo2(CO)8] [12]. Here, we describe the CT interaction and the resulting photoactivity of the ion pair [Hg(cyclam)]2+[Co(CO)4]“ with cyclam = 1,4,8,11tetraazacyclotetradecane. This example demon strates that under suitable conditions the CT inter action which is present in a polar m etal-m etal bond can still be observed if both metal centers are separated in an ion pair. Our observation does not only represent the first case of an OS CT interac tion involving Hg2+ as an acceptor, it is also a val uable contribution to the photochemistry of mer cury compounds which is receiving considerable interest in recent years [12—16].

The photoredox reaction of trisoxalato cobaltate (III) has been studied by means of ultrafast extended x-ray absorption fine structure and optical transient spectroscopy after excitation in the charge-transfer band with 267-nm femtosecond pulses. The Co-O transient bond length changes and the optical spectra and kinetics have been measured and compared with those of ferrioxalate. Data presented...
متن کاملA Complete Experimental Assessment of Franck-Condon Structural Effects for an Irreversible Outer-Sphere Electron-Transfer Reaction: Applications of Time-Dependent Raman Scattering Theory to the One-Electron Reduction of 4-Cyano-N-methylpyridinium
A complete experimental description of the vibrational Franck-Condon barrier to the one-electron reduction of 4-cyanoN-methylpyridinium cation (NC-py-CH,+) has been obtained. Because of the chemical irreversibility of the electron transfer, the reaction is not readily amenable to study by conventional structural methods. The approach successfully employed here, however, was a time-dependent ana...

Oligomers of iso-triacetylene have been investigated as components for electronic materials, due to their interesting structural and nonlinear optical properties. Recent efforts have been geared toward the incorporation of these cross-conjugated ligands into “wire-like” organometallic scaffolds. The development of organometallic complexes can assist in the elucidation of charge transfer through...
متن کاملPhotoredox Decomposition of [Cobalamin-^-NC-Fen(CN)5]3* Induced by Metal-to-Metal Charge Transfer Excitation
In the presence of oxygen aqueous solutions of the binuclear complex [cobalamin-^-NCFe(CN)5]3' undergo a redox photolysis (0 ~ 2 x 10'3 at Airr = 405 nm) which yields aquocobalamin and [Fe(CN)6]3\ It is suggested that this photoreaction is induced by direct metal-tometal charge transfer (MMCT) excitation. On the contrary, [cobalamin-fx-NC-Ru(CN)5]3' is photo-inert because a reactive MMCT state ...
